Indelible

I hit a joint to forget you,

But the baby you’re can’t crawl outta my mind

You’re beautifully slow;

Swaying left and right,

Your stilettos leaving deep ruts in my heart

We love, deeper than we should

Then fall like lovers do

Pain is all love begets.

Three Letters

valentines-day-624440_640
I remember her. Every day, I see her. The soft-spoken beauty who grabbed my hands when other beauties were still waiting for the opportune time. She reached out, in three words, a paper ironed and slipped in a perfumed envelope.
“Anto Iberna. Aduari”
(You’re beautiful to me. I want you)
I read the letter, the meaning too gross for my mind to process, so I studied her handwriting. Lord, it was a result of routine scribbling. It wasn’t calligraphy per se, but it was nothing ordinary.

Every word smiled at me.
Every word seduced me.

I think I saw her writing them with a ruler pressed on a page as a pen left bits of her soul on the page. She was the letter.
It was an art.
What was I to do? What did it mean when a class 6 pupil wrote a class 4 a letter?
“Anto Iberna. Aduari” this had to be a joke, because I knew ‘beautiful’ boys were not skinny and didn’t have big front teeth; they had round heads, and more meat, and were taller, and were fighters. But I was just a skinny boy. I wasn’t ‘ beautiful’. I was different, I was weak, but I could run, so I ran from her. Ran away from her.
She was the letter, remember? I ran away with her in my pocket, and when I couldn’t run anymore, I crushed her in my palms and chewed her. I killed her.
Fast forward, 15 or so years later. Nairobi homes ghosts. She is the most beautiful of them all. I, the murderer sips coffee that her ghost has paid for.
“I love your locs.” They are four words now, she talks more now. Her thighs fill her skirt. She is juicy. She is the words. I chewed them.

Of Poets and Whores

She’s a girl who’ll be known for her balls
Whoever she encounters she hardens or breaks
She shines with the moon
Arresting the glory of goddesses
My chest heaves at her expectations
Sure, to get laid is a given
But to satisfy a woman is an art
She isn’t your everyday whore
She’s a liberated woman
feigning arrest by hormones
Everything takes shape in her wake
She gobbles my man like a hungry tigress
Yeah she is hungry
She hunts and thrills at her kill
Tonight I’m her prey
She takes her time
A sinister smile spreads on her lips
“This way”
I obey
She rides at top speed then slows down
Then accelerates
Then I die
She’s gone like smoke that leaves no trail
Somebody find her
I swear I would trade my mansion in heaven for the thrill of her ride

Bruises and clots

We will fight again tonight
Like we always do when liquor fills the receptacles of our souls
My spirits will be on vacation
With reason and gentleness as escorts
The love we’ve been weeding all these years will melt into blood under fumes of fury

Whose blood will it be?
I pray it be mine
The kitchen floor hasn’t regained its lustre
No more pints for you

I also pray the neighbours will mind our business
Save you from me
And me from the law
I hate fights
But I love make-up sex

I love how we grow tender with each other
Even before the bandages leave our wounds
In the midst of it all; the blood, the swearing, curses and regrets, remember I love you

In my own strange way

I love your sad moments and your happy days too
I love your torn lips, your bruised face, bloodshot eyes
I love your limping feet
For in these moments of darknes
When beauty vacates
Kindness grows
Generosity takes root
And we love more than the promise our looks sculpted

We will fight tonight baby
Let’s fight even harder tommorow for what shall remain of ourselves

Zion Awaits your arrival

Dearest move with me
Don’t let my long strides
Leave you behind
Walk much faster dear
This place isn’t home
It has vampires and vermin
Baying for your blood
The vampires slither
Smoothly in darkness
Their fangs out
Walk dear, walk on

The rain will be here
Look at the sky
The dark clouds hang
Ready to spew on us
Everything is against us
No friends
No family
Nature hurls its storms at us
Just cling dear
Cling onto my scarf dear
It throttles me but hang on
It’s a small price I pay

Now move, your feet blistered
Ankles failing
Don’t give in
We’ll heal in our safe haven
Your mouth trembles
Don’t speak
Just move
For Zion isn’t for the weak
Let’s get to Zion
Let’s get to Zion
For glory awaits you there

We’ll overcome

I have watched your face cringe
At the sight of me
I have heard you say you hate me
The nights have refused to go
Darkness blankets our lives
Suffocating us
In the depths of its palms
So all we do is fight,
Fighting ourselves
Because we’re too frightened
To step outside and face our tragedy

I have watched your doubts grow
Fuelled by absence of affection
In words I say
The black soot of doom
Encapsulated the promises I made
I couldn’t keep them anymore

We’ve morphed into new beings
Oblivious of what love means
Can’t we coexist even in hate?
This bull-matador affair
We’ll leave us bruised

I want to touch a part of you
The scariest parts you’ve always
Concealed with a fake smile
I want to feel them
These parts you’ve never introduced me to
They might as well love the stranger

My dear, can’t we stop worrying?
Whatever happens
Or fails to happen
We belong to us
We can weather the storm
And still be warm with love
There are still parts of me that ache
From prickles in every word you said
But, I still believe
That …
Miracles are wrapped in darkness

I need You

I need you
I need you like the desert needs rain
Like the breathless need air
Like the flowers need sunshine
I need from the first chapter
of my love story to the last

I want to hold your hands
Laugh at your jokes
walk by your side
tickle you every minute
Snuggle on the couch
Look into your eyes
Talk about everything
and kiss your lips every single day
